Google Claims to Index Flash, SEO No No's

So Google now claims they can index flash, and they just might be able to crawl it and pull some of the content now, but I would be careful.

Check out this search on google dealing with indexed flash: http://www.google.com/search?q=%22fashion+design%22+filetype%3ASWF

Pretty bad huh, barely readable. The problem with Google's flash indexing is there is no use of tags. When they index flash now it is all TEXT. No separation of header tags, paragraph tags, etc.

Also, if you now decide to design your 10 page site into a 1 page flash site you have effectively chopped out your link building efforts. Linking into certain parts of the site for content related stuff is cut out, which can definitely impact your rankings.

I would strongly reconsider a full flash website unless rankings are not your thing.

The Overture Tool is Dead!

This tool has been around since I can remember, when I was a novice SEO'er. It will be sad to see this tool go, but it is time to move on.

The tool has had problems for the last few years. Confirmed by webmasterworld, the tool is pulling the plug. There is now a 301 redirect in place at inventory.overture.com, the location that once held the search tool.

SOOO LONG OVERTURE SEARCH TOOL!!!!

Adwords Content Network Tools Unleashed

So, Google Adwords has finally unleashed a way to control that crazy content network traffic. There is a new tool that allows the ability to block out ads from being displayed on designated urls and more.

What is nice is you can actually pull the list of all the sites that your ads are being displayed on. See if they are good converting sites based on your content and block those sites if need be.

My tests have already proved fruitful. I have been able to cut content traffic in half by eliminating a few worthless ad sites.

Give it a test, let me know what you think.

EarthHour

So Google has done it again. Managing to be a part of something huge. On March 31st Google turned its homepage from white to black, supporting EarthHour.

EarthHour was held on March 31, 2008, a national effort to turn off power for one hour. Cities a-crossed the globe participated. Last year Sydney, Australia was the first city to take part. This year many cities and people took part.

There are a few reasons why I am blogging on this topic. First, I support EarthHour. I support people taking care of this planet. Second, I support Googles ideas to back such a great cause. Google is not only the all powerful search engine, they manage to back some of the greatest efforts.

The Importance of Local Search

How important is local search? Very Important!

Local search is becoming more important by the day, especially in Google because of how the local results are displayed in organic search. Doing a local search in Google like "Dentists in Charlotte" will yield a list of results with local results at the top. What is interesting is that it shows 10 results, not 1 or 3, but 10. Not only does it show the company name, but it also displays the company phone number. This makes the user more apt to call a possible company before even looking at the organic results below.

I have been doing a lot of digging to find out what is need to rank high in Google local. Here are a few of my findings:

-you must have a local.google.com listing created. Within this listing you should have as much information as possible. (description, link to your website, product listings, etc.)

-you also need to have a listing in SuperPages. Google uses some of SuperPages local results, and helping boost an already present listing.

-It seems like sites with more content, pages and incoming links rank better in the Google local search. I do not think this is a make it or break it thing, but definitely helps.

-Insiderpages.com could potentially leverage local rankings.

I am definitely open to feedback from everyone. If you would like to contact me with more information on local search please do so.

Dashes vs. Underscores?

There has been many questions concerning this topic. So what is the correct way to use these 2? I did quite a bit of research on this topic the last couple days and stumbled a-crossed the nail in the coffin so to speak.

Before I get to the solution, a brief rundown of what these 2 characters are and how they are used. A (-) dash and (_) underscore are used in providing a space between to keywords in a URL. For example I might have a page called "horseracing.asp". I could break up "horse" and "racing" by doing the following: "horse-racing.asp" or "horse_racing.asp" Either form work to create a new page. The question we need answered is, what character actually separates the keywords in search engines, so they reflect 2 separate keywords.

After much digging, the solution primarily came from a well known forum that stated that a Google representative described it as "Underscores are not delimiters, dashed are". Although not giving out the exact answer, one can assume that when using an underscore it acts as another letter and would create one big keyword. When using a dash, it is looked at as a delimiter (break) between keywords.

The simple solution, use a dash between all keywords if you want to represent them as separate keywords.

Why No Keyword Filters!!!

Why has Google Adsense not allowed filtering by keyword yet??? I have been a fan of Adsense and have used it for quite some time now, but, I feel it is still flawed without keyword filtering. As a premium publisher I know for a fact that you can filter this way, because I have done it. But, as a basic publisher like 99% of us are, there is no option for this.

What bothers me the most about it is the fact that is truly is useful. I have been working on my CharlotteGarageSales site for sometime now, and I am running ads down the left side. I feel ads can be very important to a site if done correctly. Now, my ads would convert at a much higher rate if they displayed Charlotte based content on stuff pertaining to the area, not stuff of garage sales. Look at it this way, if you were hunting around and found a nice site on garage sales in your city, and was actually browsing the sale listings, would you click on an advertising link that said "garage sales" or click on the link that maybe said "charlotte restaurants" or "charlotte jobs"?

I rest my case, conversion and ad relevance is going to be based on good filtering, something we just have not seen yet!!! Lets hope this entry is completely irrelevant tomorrow!

SEM tactics

I discovered a great article today in the SearchMarketingStandard Magazine and I just had to share it because it is something I feel strongly about.

The article had to do with SEO tactics in todays society and how people will jump on anything. There are so many contraversial topics in SEO today, and so many people want to jump at the first thing they hear.

Here is a list of topics that are currently argued at tradeshows and conferences:
-Paid links will get you penalized
-Social networking is the only new way to SEO
-Directory submissions have lost importance
-"Links" pages are not effective anymore

I could go on and on here, but lets just touch on a few of the ones above.

When we look at this list, we all say, "yea, i have definitely heard that". So to shed a little light on the matter, everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt here. All of the topics above can be looked at as true and false.

Social Networking, the new huge buzz around the seo tables. I have seen so many articles that talk about how traditional SEO is dead, and that social networking is the new way to go. I just don't buy it. There will always be a need for traditional SEO, and there has always been a need since I got into this industry over 5 years ago. Yes, we might want to dabble in the blogs and myspace to get a little more exposure. And, yes, we might want to create a great network of linkedin pages relating to the industry we are working on. But, the matter of the fact is, without your title tags and your keyword related content and your basic good quality links, your site will never see the light of day.

All these topics always get argued about until people are blue in the face. The simple solution to all these topics is very simple, take every seo tactic and every topic with a grain of salt.

I feel much better getting that off my chest :)
